Heavy Duty Cordless Hammer DrillsCordless Drill Chucks![]() There are a number of different types of chuck that you are likely to run into when looking to purchase a Cordless Drill, these are the keyed chuck, the keyless chuck, and the Special Direct System (SDS). The Keyed ChuckOnce upon a time every drill was fitted with a keyed chuck but these days they are rapidly being replaced by keyless chucks. The drawback to keyed chucks is that they require a small key to tighten the chuck jaws and inevitably these small keys are easily lost. The Keyless ChuckKeyless chucks can be tightened using the hand rather than a key. Whilst this type of chuck is certainly a better option it is worth noting that some budget Cordless Drills are equipped with poor quality chucks that may loosen during the drilling process resulting in the drill bit wandering and, in some circumstances, breaking. Thankfully this is not a common problem with a good quality Cordless Drill. The SDSThe SDS (standing for Special Direct System) is not so much a chuck as a receiver that an SDS drill bit pushes into and locks into place with no tightening required. This system is fitted to the Cordless SDS Drill which is designed specially for drilling through hard materials such as masonry, learn more about the Cordless SDS Drill. Only SDS drill bits can be used in conjunction with a Cordless SDS Hammer Drill but an SDS chuck adaptor can be purchased to use standard drill bits.
